On The Trail

A series of geeky interviews with lightweight backpackers around the world. I'll ask them what they take on the trail, and along the way we'll all learn more about what makes this sport great.

Who are you, what do you do?

I sign trail registers as Pepper and am proud to be from Pennsylvania. I currently enjoy creating routes and exploring distant locations, seeing familiar locations in different seasons and incorporating technical elements into thru-hiking. Sometimes I go fast, sometimes I go light. I am guilty of having the requisite alphabet soup of completed trail and have worn through my fair share of shoes. I value paying my skill set forward through on-line planning resources on my website and as a field instructor and administrator with Outward Bound. I love crosswords, planning, sewing, planning more, cycling, organizing to plan, and alpine environments.

Who are you, what do you do?

I am Lawton Grinter a.k.a. Disco. I’m a Forestry Consultant by day where I help Colorado landowners create healthy forests and homeowners mitigate against future wildfires. My passion is hiking and I have been lucky enough to hike some of the longer trails in these United States (AT, PCT, CDT) and even a few shorter trails including the Colorado Trail and the Grand Enchantment Trail.

My need for creativity has resulted in a book, a documentary, and The Trail Show, a podcast I host with 3 other amazing thru-hikers. My website serves as a clearinghouse of sorts to all the spokes on that wheel.

Who are you, what do you do?

The name is Paul Magnanti. Paul Mags or just Mags for short. I work as an IT Monkey (TM) during the day to fund my outdoor habits.

My personal home in Cyberspace is pmags.com where I post my trips reports, photos and advice. It's been described as down-to-earth, straight forward, and practical. Kinda describes me as well. :)

I've been fortunate enough to hike an alphabet soup of trails (AT, PCT, CDT, and so on) and try to get out every weekend. In addition to backpacking, I'm an avid backcountry skier. In the past few years, I've also taken up alpine and trad climbing. Besides my website, I also co-host a podcast at thetrailshow.com. We discuss the hiking lifestyle. Our motto is "Less gear and more beer"! :) I'll occasionally assist Andew Skurka on his guided offerings.
